I need advice regarding my new rat, Donald. Help?
I originally posted this on facebook so I'll just copy and paste the post...
This is Donald, I adopted him from a friend and he was alone and in a hamster cage so I wanted to get him into a bigger one as he's growing up. I got him 2 friends who are a lot bigger but I've introduced them in a few different neutral places. They get on fine. Donald has had the odd stand off which is expected but ye doesn't seem to want to know them. He's on this shelf all the time asking to come out, he's been coming out for at least a few hours each day to get him more confident. Problem is he'd rather be with me than them. I put him in his old cage last night just in case and he acts no different. He's even lying down with his eyes half closing as he won't sleep, this was in his old cage too. There are hiding places and beds for him but what I initially thought was sweet has become a bit of a problem. I love him but I have a life too! Any advice... (ps cage looks empty, more at other side plus hammocks arriving tomorrow)
He's a little live wire too, marks me all the time! Also, when he has food he'll get carried away and try to carry 5 nuggets at once... he has plenty too!
Help... Donald's obsessed with me!!!

Donald's first day in his new home!
Hello everyone, Donald the rat has arrived!
He's a beauty, very nervous at first though which wasn't helped by a 40 minute plus drive home from where he was picked up from. However, it didn't take long at all until he started to feel at home...
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
He started to tuck into some whole grain cracker which helped to break the ice a little bit. As you can see he thoroughly enjoyed it!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
After the long drive I started to feel rather fatigued meaning I needed a bit of bed rest. The new adoptee had already been sat on my knee for a while but I couldn't leave him on his own so he came up with me. I placed his cage in a safe place but he wasn't satisfied, he wanted to come out again. I gave in and let him roam about on the bed where he stayed for a couple of hours. He had no accidents either although he's proving to be a bit of a handful.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
He started to bite the cuff of a new hooded top of mine after several goes of giving me some rodentistry.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
He then did something that no other rat of mine has ever done, remove the letter G from my keyboard. Not only that, he also tried to run off with it in his mouth. He didn't get far and in the end I managed to get it back on, it took a while though!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Now I like my rats to be well behaved, in moderation of course. However, I sometimes have to be firm with them and tell them when they're going that little bit too far. Donald didn't take too kindly to this and went off in a bit of a sulk.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
He settled down for a nap but made sure he was as far away from me as possible.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
We've made up now, I'll let him off as I think he's just been very excitable today. I do feel as though Donald is starting to form a very unhealthy obsession with me which is why I'm getting some friends for him. I'll be sure to post an update when they arrive, I'm thinking pretty soon!
I hope I can manage to get a good nights sleep tonight knowing Donald's eyes will be fixated on me. I've given him enough nuggets to prepare for a nuclear war so that should keep his mind occupied for a bit!
See you all very soon,
Barry

Introducing you to Donald!
Hello everyone!
In my last post I explained to you all about the recent losses, mainly the rats. Well, Gracie is still going strong despite her cancers growth. She has 2 now but she is still content and comfortable. Mags is still Ok too.
She's been enjoying a few naughty treats as you can see above. Here she is with a fruit pastille, she looks so happy!
Anyway, I have some good news! Next week there will be a new addition to the family, this time a male rat. Here he is:
He's called Donald and he's arriving sometime next week. He's young and very tame too. I'm adopting him from a friend who was looking to re-home him so it's come at just the right time for me. I think I'll have to get him a companion as I don't think introducing him to Mags is a good idea...
Anyway, after he's arrived I will be posting lots more pictures of him so stay tuned!
Hope you're all having a lovely weekend... :)

Coming to the end of an era...
Hello everyone, well I thought it was about time I updated this blog. I can't believe how long ago it was since I last posted!
I'm just going to give you an overview of what's happened recently.
With having lots of pets, it's inevitable that there's going to be deaths and there's been a few in recent months.
First of all, here's Lucy. She had to leave us just before Christmas due to yet another tumor. She wasn't in any pain but it had become too big and had spread. The picture was taken in the vets waiting room just before she went.
Then just after Christmas, Pumpkin had to leave us due to an infection of the uterus. Looking back, we feel she hadn't been well for a while as she was always unusually docile. She had a happy few months though after being adopted.
Then very shortly after, Daisy had a tumor but she had an op and was fighting strong.
Unfortunately, just days later the cancer had returned and after losing weight in the space of a few days, we decided it was best to let her go on a high.
Now, Gracie has a tumor and has just days to live.
In the midst of all this, Harvey the giant rabbit had died in his sleep.
Very quickly we're coming to the end of an era but 1 thing is certain and that is that the animals have all had happy lives!
Next time I'll be focusing on some more light hearted stuff.
I promise I won't leave it as long next time to post!
